What is an order bump or sales bumps?

As a web designer, I get asked quite a bit what is an order bump?

Order Bumps are a clever way of increasing your sales from the same amount of customers. Order bumps allow you to offer an extra product at the start of the checkout process on your checkout page.

Statistics show that you can easily increase revenue by offering a related product at this stage in the checkout with some marketers reporting up to a 50% take rate on an order bump.

Example product with order bump

In the image above you can see an order bump in Thrivecart.

An order bump lets customers add another product to their purchase with one click.

So if you have a closely related product to the original product on offer an order bump could be just the strategy you need to increase revenue.

Order bump product statistics

Order bumps work! Think about it, a customer is already on your checkout page to buy your main product which means they already see value in your offer that’s why an order bump can increase average order value by 10 to 30 per cent. Paykickstart is an online eCommerce platform and they implemented an order bump of a $7 ebook on a client’s site and increased revenue by 40 per cent. You can see it here. In this blog post, Teachable states that order bumps were responsible for an extra $107000 for their creators since they released the feature but it is unclear what the time frame is. An order bump offer can increase revenue across the board if you have upsells and downsells.

Upsell vs order bump

The difference between an upsell and an order bump is:

  • An order bump is placed on your checkout page (a low ticket item is best because you don’t have a lot of room for explanation in a tiny box).
  • An upsell is shown to a customer after the initial purchase on its own page.

Technically you could say an order bump is upsells but it’s just placed on the checkout.

If you are considering an upsell vs order bump why not try both. In most cases products are easy to create.

But for both situations, you can bundle together a bunch of products and add scarcity and a discount to trigger powerful psychology in your marketing.

If you have a couple of underperforming products why not remove them from your website and use them as an order bump instead (if they are closely related to a product that is selling well then this simple change could boost your average order value by 10 per cent).

Order bump ideas

Here is a list of order bump ideas:

  • A digital version of your product if you are selling a physical product like a book, CD or DVD.
  • A low ticket complimentary product (ebooks, templates or worksheets).
  • Product insurance or protection plan.
  • A product maintenance plan.
  • Accessories.
  • Product customisation.
  • A bundle of your previous products.
  • Faster delivery.
  • A delivery subscription plan.
  • A special offer.
  • A membership program (a course).

An irresistible order bump offer

I would say the perfect order bump product would have to include scarcity, a discount and closely compliment the product your customer is already in the process of buying.

If they are on your checkout page then you can make an educated guess at what other types of products they are interested in buying as a sales bump.

The most profitable order bumps will be a digital product or bundle of digital products that you don’t sell on your main website.
